JSC NIIAS Significantly Reduces Development Costs with SCADE Suite

Founded in 1956, JSC NIIAS engages in the research, design, and implementation of safety, communication, and information systems for rail transportation applications. JSC RZD, the Russian Railways, employs over 1.3 million people and transports over 1.35 billion passengers and transports over 1.3 billion tons of goods. JSC NIIAS is the institute that is responsible for developing automation systems for transportation management, safety assurance systems for train control, satellite-based technologies and centralized systems for information security for JSC RZD.

The Locomotive Automation Department of JSC NIIAS selected SCADE Suite to develop integrated locomotive on-board safety equipment called KLUB-U. This equipment consists of a number of modules, including the main processing module, the receiving and decrypting module for the ALS signal, the route module and the module of locomotive indication. KLUB-U is designed for use on all types of locomotives and is intended to monitor the train's location, aspects of trackside signals and permissible speed by using satellite communications between the train and the control center.

JSC NIIAS selected SCADE Suite because it fulfils the EN 50128 standard, establishes links between all levels of requirements and source code, automates code generation, test coverage procedures and development of documentation, and allows for the reuse of SCADE function in new models.

Esterel Technologies Success Story - NIIAS

SCADE was first used on the Route Module of KLUB-U to review high-level requirements and craft the requirements document, establish links between the HLRs and SCADE constructs, design test cases and model test coverage analysis, and integrate the KCG generated code. This project was so successful that JSC NIIAS decided to utilize SCADE on a second project, the MP-ALS module. This module receives and decrypts the ALS code from the track signal and determines the current state of the locomotive. During this project, over 5000 lines of C-code were generated using SCADE Suite KCG.

JSC NIIAS realized a significant reduction in development costs by using SCADE Suite. Reductions were due to automatic code generation and document generation, and model test coverage analysis. JSC NIIAS also reports significant savings in simulation and debugging (50 percent) and links between requirements (30 percent). JSC NIIAS plans to use SCADE on two upcoming projects: an integrated on-board system providing safety through train-traffic control and a cabinet-type interlocking system.
