What is DO-178B?

DO178, currently known as DO-178B, is described in RTCA Document RTCA/DO-178B, titled Software Considerations in Airborne Systems and Equipment Certification. This specification was developed by the avionics industry to establish software considerations for developers, installers, and users, when aircraft equipment design is implemented using microcomputer techniques.

Note that DO-178B/ED-12B projects must be certified as a system, not a standalone component, as for IEC 61508 software components.
